I have been working on writing a self-help book about my experience with NVLD. I feel like this is important because there's not a lot of information out there to begin with, but there's especially not much information for teens and young adults. These stages are important times in a person's life, but now you have to navigate Nonverbal Learning Disorder as well, and that doesn't make it any easier. For some people the beginning of this journey can seem negative and make it hard to find the positive. I was one of those people. After the relief of knowing that all the struggling wasn't all in my head and I was just being dramatic, and there was truly something going on, I shut down knowing that I was different and had to work harder than everyone else. I quickly realized, with the help of my family, that this diagnosis was manageable, and I could take control. Since then, I have been trying to make it better day by day. It has gotten better, and I feel normal. I know that I'm always going to be different, but now I think of it as being gifted and a little more ambitious.
I want to be a voice in the community who lets people know they're okay and they're not alone going through this. This disorder is very uncommon and it's hard to find like-minded people, but it's possible. You just have to put yourself out there, and as scary as that sounds, that's how the information gets out there. That's why I started Julie's Neverland, decided to write the book: NVLD and Me, and NeVerLanD Clubhouse for Teens | Facebook group Comment down below how you would want NVLD information presented to you!
